Hair Length Requirements
For waxing to be effective, hair must be at least 1/4 inch long — typically 2 to 3 weeks of growth after shaving. If hair is too short, the wax cannot grip it effectively, and the removal will be incomplete. If hair is too long, it can be more painful and the wax may not adhere properly.
If your hair is significantly longer than 1/2 inch, trim it before your appointment or ask your esthetician to trim it. Do not shave for at least 2 to 3 weeks before your waxing appointment, as shaving creates blunt ends that are harder for the wax to grip.
Exfoliation Before Waxing
Gentle exfoliation 24 to 48 hours before your appointment helps remove dead skin cells and free any ingrown hairs. This makes the waxing more effective and reduces the risk of ingrown hairs after the service. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating glove — do not exfoliate on the day of your appointment.
Avoid harsh exfoliants or chemical exfoliators (like AHAs or BHAs) for 48 hours before waxing, as these can make the skin more sensitive. Physical exfoliation with a gentle scrub is the safest pre-waxing option.
Skincare and Product Considerations
Avoid moisturizing on the day of your appointment. Lotions and oils create a barrier that prevents the wax from adhering to the hair. Arrive with clean, dry skin. If you need to wash the area, do so without applying lotion afterward.
Discontinue retinol, Retin-A, and other retinoid products for at least one week before waxing, as these make the skin more sensitive and prone to lifting. If you are taking Accutane or oral acne medication, consult your physician before waxing — these medications can make the skin too sensitive for waxing.
- —Hair must be at least 1/4 inch long (2–3 weeks of growth)
- —Gently exfoliate 24–48 hours before the appointment
- —Do not moisturize on the day of the appointment
- —Discontinue retinol and retinoids for one week prior
- —Do not shave for 2–3 weeks before waxing
- —Avoid sun exposure for 24 hours before and after
Clothing Choices
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. Tight clothing can irritate the freshly waxed skin and cause friction. For leg waxing, wear loose pants or a skirt. For bikini or Brazilian waxing, wear loose bottoms and bring clean underwear if desired.
After the appointment, continue wearing loose clothing for the rest of the day to minimize irritation. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat and moisture — cotton is the most comfortable option for freshly waxed skin.
Scheduling Considerations
Avoid scheduling waxing during your menstrual cycle, as skin can be more sensitive during this time. If you must schedule during your cycle, take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes before the appointment (if approved by your physician).
Avoid scheduling waxing immediately before or after sun exposure, swimming, or heavy exercise. Give your skin time to recover. Schedule waxing 2 to 3 days before a special event or beach day to allow any redness to subside.
Pain Management
Waxing involves some discomfort, especially for first-time clients. The sensation is a quick pull when the wax is removed. Most clients find that the discomfort decreases with regular waxing, as hair grows back finer and sparser over time.
To minimize discomfort, take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes before the appointment (if approved by your physician), avoid caffeine before the appointment (as it can stimulate the nervous system), and breathe deeply during the service. Your esthetician will work efficiently to minimize the duration of discomfort.
What to Expect During the Appointment
Your esthetician will clean the area, apply the wax in sections, and remove it with strips or by hand (depending on the wax type). The process is methodical — each section is waxed once or twice to ensure complete removal. For large areas like legs or back, the appointment may take 30 to 60 minutes.
Communicate with your esthetician throughout the service. If you need a break, if the wax is too hot, or if you have concerns, let them know. They are experienced in making the process as comfortable as possible.
After the Appointment
Some redness and sensitivity are normal immediately after waxing. This typically subsides within a few hours. Apply a soothing lotion or aloe vera gel to calm the skin. Avoid sun exposure, hot showers, swimming, and tight clothing for 24 hours.
For ongoing smoothness, exfoliate gently 2 to 3 times per week and moisturize daily. This helps prevent ingrown hairs and keeps the skin smooth between appointments. Schedule your next waxing every 3 to 4 weeks for best results.
