Expected Duration by Treatment
Keratin treatments typically last 3 to 5 months. Brazilian blowouts last 10 to 12 weeks. Relaxers are permanent but require root touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks. These are baseline estimates — actual longevity depends on the factors below.
| Treatment | Expected Duration | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Keratin | 3–5 months | Sulfate-free, sodium-chloride-free products |
| Brazilian Blowout | 10–12 weeks | Sulfate-free products |
| Relaxer | Permanent (roots need touch-up) | Root touch-up every 6–8 weeks |
Hair Type and Texture
Coarser, thicker hair tends to hold smoothing treatments longer because the cuticle is more resistant to opening. Fine hair may lose the treatment effect sooner because the cuticle is more easily disrupted. Curly and coily hair that has been smoothed will revert more quickly at the roots as new growth appears.
Your stylist will set realistic expectations based on your hair type during the consultation. If your hair is very fine or very porous, the treatment may not last as long as the baseline estimates.
Washing Frequency
Every wash gradually removes the treatment coating. Washing less frequently extends the result. Aim for 2 to 3 washes per week, using dry shampoo between washes to absorb oil without stripping the treatment.
The first wash after a keratin treatment is especially important — follow the waiting period exactly. For Brazilian blowouts, while there is no waiting period, minimizing washes in the first week helps the treatment set.
Product Selection
Product choice is one of the most significant factors. Sulfates strip the treatment coating. Sodium chloride (salt) breaks down keratin. Always use sulfate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoos and conditioners. Professional brands like Kérastase offer formulations specifically designed for treated hair.
Avoid products with high alcohol content, which can dry the hair and accelerate treatment breakdown. Your stylist will recommend the appropriate products after your service.
- —Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner exclusively
- —Avoid sodium chloride (check labels for "salt")
- —Use professional, treatment-safe products like Kérastase
- —Avoid high-alcohol styling products
- —Use a UV-protective spray for sun exposure
Swimming and Sun Exposure
Chlorine and saltwater are enemies of smoothing treatments. Both strip the coating and accelerate fading. If you swim, wet hair with clean water first, apply a leave-in conditioner as a barrier, and rinse immediately afterward. Avoid swimming for at least one week after a fresh treatment.
UV exposure also degrades the treatment. Wear a hat during extended sun exposure and use a UV-protective product. In Miami, where sun and water activities are common year-round, these precautions are especially important.
Heat Styling
A benefit of smoothing treatments is reduced styling time — many clients find they can air-dry with good results. However, if you do use hot tools, always apply a heat protectant. Excessive heat can degrade the treatment over time.
Use the lowest effective temperature on flat irons and blow-dryers. Give your hair rest days. The less heat you apply, the longer the treatment will last.
Miami Humidity Factor
Miami’s humidity is relentless, and no treatment is completely immune. Smoothing treatments significantly reduce frizz and make hair more manageable, but in extreme humidity, some texture may return. This is normal and does not mean the treatment has failed.
A lightweight anti-humidity spray can help on the most humid days. If you notice significant reversion, schedule a touch-up or consult your stylist about whether a different treatment might be more effective for your hair type.
When to Schedule a Touch-Up
Signs your treatment is fading include increased frizz, loss of smoothness, curl pattern returning, and difficulty styling. Schedule a touch-up when you notice these signs rather than waiting for the full expected duration to pass.
